The calming trifecta of sniffing, licking, and chewing. These simple activities can help an anxious, nervous, or hyper dog to self soothe in a natural way.
Sniffing:
Dogs have an incredible sense of smell. It is estimated that they have about 300 million scent receptors (as compared to a humans 6 million). Scent and smell is how they see and experience the world and gather important information. The area of the brain that is connected to smell releases dopamine, which is a chemical that is important in regulating anxiety.
Tips:
More time to sniff on walks
Use a snuffle mat for meals
DIY food puzzle toys and foraging activities
Nose work-hide food and treats in the house or back yard
Enroll in a nose work class or you can also do an at home option
Licking
The repetitive motion of licking can release endorphins and serotonin, which can help your dog to feel less stressed and more calm.
Tips:
Lickimat (all sorts of great things you can put on them!)
Stuffed Kong or bone (this can be licking and chewing)
Treat delivery through a food tube (especially great for dogs who can be a little nippy or excited when taking food from hands)
Chewing
Having something to chew on can give an anxious or hyper dog something to focus on. It can also help for puppies who are teething or might be extra mouthy or for dogs who use their mouths and might get a bit nippy when excited or overstimulated.
Tips:
Determine your dogs chew type and make sure toys are appropriate
Give edible or long lasting chews
Supervise if in doubt
