Don’t get me wrong, the same walking path and loops can be magical. But sometimes we need to add a little oomph. I will show you some ways how.

I like to find adventure spots near and around water for many reasons! It’s calming, it’s pretty, dogs have an opportunity to get in the water (just dip paws or swim if they want to-always a choice!), AND we can catch glimpses of amazing water birds. So exercise + nature + water activities + birding (and with birding, you can work on impulse control with your dog, so absolutely a win-win all around!)

Bring snacks and food and play games! Two of my favorite games:

FIND IT

  1. toss a piece of dog food or treat (in any direction-in front, to the side, or behind you)

  2. your dog should chase after it to “find it”

  3. when they find that goodie, toss out another one for them

Dogs LOVE playing this game because it gives them a purposeful and fun “job” to do, which is to find the goodie (and let’s them engage their sense of smell-which is super important for dogs because it helps them process and make sense of the world).

2. SCATTER-FEEDING

  • similar to Find It, but this time, you are tossing a small handful of food and treats for them to “find”

  • toss onto the sidewalk or you can use the grass, leaves, or snow for an extra challenge!

Get creative and add in some obstacle courses and agility! What can you ask your dog to go on top off, around, under, or through? Rocks and logs are awesome for this and empty playgrounds!

Don’t forget to give your dog a choice when you ask them to do something. They are allowed to say no and we need to be respectful of that. But you might be surprised at what your dog will say yes to (especially if some cheese may be involved….)

You can make a course or even practice some sit and down stays!

Find pretty flowers and cool trees and take pictures! You can pose your dog (sit, down, stand, paws up) or take active shots (like have your dog do a stay and then take pictures as they are running to you!)
